A Pseudo-Slumber Party
August 21, 2009 – Aubri was pretty determined to have a birthday party that she could invite her school and church friends to this year. So we did just that! Aubri was also pretty determined to make it a SLUMBER party. We did NOT do just that! The still small voice in my head, which grows wiser with each additional year of parentood, suggested that an all-night party with a dozen 3-7 year olds may not be as brilliant as one would be inclined to think. So instead of the all-nighter we did a 3-hour, slumber-party-themed party (a “pseudo-slumber party”, if you will).
Ten of Aubri’s favorite friends arrived in their pajamas at 5:00 on Friday evening. There were 12 girls in all, including Aubri and Rylynn. (It could be argued that 12 is a bit much for a 5-year-old birthday party, but I’ve always been a strong supporter of “the more the merrier”.) We started the party off with pizza, followed by some fun games. Then each of the girls got to decorate a pillowcase with fabric paints and markers. My mom, my sister-in-law (Tracie) and neighbor (Hillary) did so much work that they probably should have received a paycheck for the evening. They painted every one of the girls’ fingernails (that’s approximately 120 little nails in total!) and applied washable tattoos to each of the girls. Nick wowed us all when he got all 12 of the girls to sit quietly while they each took a turn to tell a bedtime story to the others. After cake and gifts we popped some popcorn and let them watch a little Curious George until their parents returned at 8:00 to pick them up. (It could also be argued that 3 hours is a bit much for a 5-year-old birthday party and I would have to say that’s a valid argument.)
All the girls seemed to have a really great time. Aubri didn’t stop smiling the entire night and has since declared it to have been “the best birthday yet”. And the still small voice in my head grew ever-so-slightly wiser throughout the course of the evening, tucking away several invaluable tidbits that might just be of use in planning any future birthday bashes.
